About Foundry Form Serif
Foundry Form Serif is a modern Egyptian style typeface with a strong lateral dynamic, great for headlines, editorial and text setting. The relatively large x-height, with open counters and stroke contrast, all help to retain clarity at small sizes. The wedge shape serifs offer a clean, sharp and angular characteristic which promote maximum clarity and a fresh tone of voice.
Originally, Foundry Form was conceived as a sans and serif family, both versions were drawn concurrently. Capital and x-height proportions match in Foundry Form Sans and Serif to allow them to work together harmoniously, yet each family can function independently.
The main concept of Foundry Form was David’s attempt to make a typeface with a maximum horizontal axis as possible, hence the very shallow connecting junctions which features prominently in such letters as the lowercase ‘a, b, d, g, h, m, n, p, q and u’. The open terminal strokes of the ‘c, e, f, g, j, r, s and t’, finish at a sharp near ninety degree angle to the vertical. The whole alphabet appears as a series of short low waves flowing in a strong direction to the right.
The slightly condensed proportions of Foundry Form make it very economical with space, allowing the horizontal emphasis to promote a clear and incisive letterform – ideal for screen use, where pixel density is at a premium. The open internal shapes along with the horizontal element of the characters enhance legibility at small sizes, allowing more internal space for the glyphs to breathe and balance harmoniously. The well-defined stroke contrast between the thick and thin strokes of Foundry Form Serif helps retain clarity in text setting and the cursive italic is ideal for book design and screen mediums.
